The Significance of CBD’s Analgesic Properties—How It Can Help You

When was the last time you experienced pain? Did it obstruct your daily activities, or was it manageable? According to a 2012 data analysis from a National Health Interview Study (NHIS) about pain, some interesting findings were revealed. It was discovered that an estimated 25.3 million American adults experienced daily pain for the last three months. Whereas, 40 million American adults experienced severe levels of pain. If you’re one of these individuals, you may understand how difficult it can be to naturally manage and relieve pain. Fortunately, cannabis and Cannabidiol (CBD) are alternative forms of medicine that can naturally relieve pain. Specifically, CBD contains analgesic properties, which can be useful to those suffering from varying levels of pain. Read on to find out how CBD’s analgesic properties can potentially help you and the cannabinoid’s ability to effectively relieve pain.

The Significance of Cannabis and CBD’s Analgesic Properties

For years, various cannabinoids including CBD have been used for its analgesic properties. However, recently, there has been an increase in the amount of attention and usage CBD is getting. In general, severe pain occurs in many forms. Millions of people endure some degree of pain in their life whether it be chronic or acute. Although there are different pharmaceutical and over-the-counter medications available, they aren’t always effective and safe. Whereas, cannabis and CBD both contain natural analgesic properties and an excellent safety profile, according to research. Aside from these benefits, CBD has a non-addictive make-up unlike other drugs like opioids.

In addition, the significance of cannabis and CBD’s analgesic properties is powerful, especially due to how it can positively improve one’s well-being. This is unlike the results that occur from opioid usage. For years and to this day, millions of people are prescribed opioids for pain management. This doesn’t mean that opioids are safe though. Opioids can be very addictive, harmful, and dangerous. Thus, more people have shifted their attention to natural forms of medicine like cannabis and CBD.

Cannabis and CBD’s Analgesic Properties in Relieving Disease-Causing Pain

Over the years, various clinical trials and studies have found noteworthy findings regarding the benefits of different cannabinoids including CBD. In general, numerous medical conditions, diseases, and illnesses cause pain. A few top diseases that cause pain consist of cancer, Multiple Sclerosis, HIV, Rheumatoid Arthritis, and neuropathic pain. Although each disease causes different levels of pain, for most people, it affects their quality of life and well-being too. Fortunately, though, cannabinoid-based medicines can be of much help to these individuals.

Thus far, CBD has shown promise in treating severe pain caused by the diseases listed above and others. Currently, CBD and other cannabinoids are being further examined regarding their role in treating cancer-causing pain. However, CBD contains anti-tumoral effects, which could be helpful to cancer patients. Despite different traditional medications that doctors prescribe, cancer-causing pain impacts millions of people.

Intractable Cancer-Causing Pain

In the past, it was found that amongst tumor-affected mice, cannabinoids increased the pain threshold that was apparent by the subjects. A couple of other studies indicated that different cannabinoids can relieve pain that was originally caused by cancer. Then, in 2007, Sativex (a sublingual spray containing CBD and THC) was approved as a treatment method for intractable cancer pain. Another study focused on comparing Sativex with a placebo to see the impact that occurred amongst subjects with intractable cancer-causing pain. It was found that Sativex delivered significant strides in analgesia. The fact that Sativex contains CBD is essential though in order to achieve substantial pain-relief.

Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Pain

Overall, CB1 and CB2 receptors play a role in pain modulation. When it comes to Multiple Sclerosis though, 50-70 percent of patients experience debilitating pain on a regular basis. MS patients can also experience symptoms including but not limited to the following: back pain, muscle pain, nerve pain, and dysesthesias. Each type of pain that’s experienced must be managed differently. However, CBD plays a role in lessening pain, tremors, and spasticity caused by MS while also improving one’s well-being.

Research Findings Regarding CBD Treatment for MS

Additionally, one study focused on the administration of Sativex to MS patients. It was found that Sativex lessened mean pain intensity while decreasing sleep interruptions. Then, a meta-analysis discovered that cannabis-based medicines were better than placebos in the treatment of MS and neuropathic pain. Other findings were discovered via a randomized and controlled trial. The trial focused on cannabis-based medicines in the treatment of central pain amongst 66 MS patients. The subjects received an oral mucosal spray that acted as an adjunctive analgesic treatment method. After treatment, it was found that the medicine was effective in reducing pain and sleeping issues. Also, many MS patients experienced reductions in central neuropathic pain after taking the medicine. Despite these findings, more research is needed for confirmation.

Neuropathic Pain

In 2005, Sativex was approved in Canada as a treatment method for central neuropathic pain experienced by MS patients. In recent years, it has been indicated that CBD and other cannabinoids can be used as analgesics in the treatment of neuropathic pain. From here, one study focused on the examination of Sativex for pain amongst 125 neuropathic pain patients. It was discovered that the 63 individuals who received Sativex treatments experienced pain reductions. Another study focused on the effectiveness and safety of cannabinoid-based medicines for treating neuropathic pain. The findings revealed that a cannabinoid spray was effective in treating neuropathic pain caused by MS.

HIV and Rheumatoid Arthritis

Lastly, it has been found that cannabinoids including CBD deliver benefits in the form of lessening pain amongst HIV patients. Also, other studies and randomized clinical trials have showed cannabis and CBD’s safety and efficacy regarding the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis. Due to CBD’s analgesic properties and anti-inflammatory benefits, this form of medicine has increased in usage and availability.

Despite doctors prescribing opioids daily, cannabinoids serve a unique purpose. Their purpose is delivering numerous potential benefits to users with very few adverse side effects.
