CBD’s Role in Recovery; Mental Health and Substance Abuse

Every year, millions of America’s experience the consequences of mental illness and substance abuse, either first or secondhand. Because these disorders truly impact everyone, they are increasingly important to discuss. During National Recovery Month, we would like to highlight CBD’s Role in Recovery.

What is National Recovery Month?

September is National Recovery Month. This month’s awareness initiative has a dual mission. First, National Recovery Month aims to increase awareness surrounding mental health and substance abuse disorders. National Recovery Month also celebrates those who are in active recovery.

What is Recovery?

There are many misconceptions surrounding “recovery” when it is applied to mental health and substance abuse disorders.

In the area of mental health, the journey to recovery looks different for everyone based on their diagnosed disorder. Individuals often use therapy, physical and mental exercises, and pharmaceutical medication.

In the area of substance abuse, recovery is a multifaceted journey. Recovery from substance abuse disorders often addresses both physical and mental needs. Interventions often include support groups, therapy, abstaining from the substances that have been abused, and sometimes pharmaceutical medication.

Sometimes, individuals will have both mental health and substance abuse disorders. Due to the rise of substance abuse across the nation, medical professionals are getting better and better and treating this combination of disorders.

Everyone’s recovery process is unique. There is no one-size-fits-all model, and different techniques work for different people. Regardless of the recovery method, this process helps to restore a person’s physical and mental well-being, providing them with the tools to cope and function in everyday society.

Effects on The Body

Did you know that mental health and substance abuse disorders profoundly affect the body?

Those with mental health disorders often experience physical symptoms. For example, a person with anxiety may have like high blood pressure, chronic inflammation, migraines, mood swings and intestinal issues? These complications can last long after an anxiety attack, and even while a person seeks treatment. In addition to anxiety, numerous mental health disorders also have physical symptoms.

Those with substance abuse disorders can experience physical symptoms. Substance abuse affects various body systems, like the lungs, cardiovascular systems, the nervous systems. During and throughout recovery, if these systems have been damaged extensively, a person may experience a slew of other health problems, especially in the lungs, kidneys, and liver.

CBD and Recovery

CBD is a cannabinoid that can be used for multiple purposes, all thanks to the endocannabinoid system.

As a neuroprotectant antioxidant, CBD helps to repair damaged cells. For those with substance abuse disorders, this is critical. Starting on a cellular level, CBD helps to stimulate the duplication of healthy cells.  Additionally, it’s antioxidant properties provide compromised and weakened immune systems with a boost, helping vital organs to function more normally.

CBD is also a proven anti-inflammatory. By tackling anxiety induced inflammation, CBD helps you to feel better even if anxiety still lingers. Additionally, studies show that CBD helps to lower blood pressure, which reduces heart rate and eases anxiety-inducing physical symptoms.

Who knew CBD could naturally help those on the road to recovery?

CBD’s Role in Recovery

An individual with mental health and substance abuse disorders can begin finding relief due to CBD’s role in recovery. While there is no single element to recovering from a mental health or substance abuse disorder, CBD can make the journey a little easier.
