National Cancer Month: Cannabis and CBD’s Potential to Combat Cancer
According to the National Cancer Institute, it was estimated that by this year, in the U.S., 1,735,350 new cancer cases will be diagnosed. Out of this number, an estimated 609,640 people will die from different forms of cancer. There are more than one hundred different types of cancer, but what are the most common ones? If you guessed breast, lung, prostate, and/or colon cancer, you’re right on target. Nowadays, more cancer treatment options are becoming available, but some methods aren’t necessarily beneficial. Research demonstrates CBD’s potential to combat cancer.
For this reason alone, more people are turning their attention towards other natural forms of treatment like cannabis and Cannabidiol (CBD) for CBD’s potential to combat cancer. Thus far, various studies and experiments have been conducted regarding cannabis and CBD’s potential to combat cancer. Keep reading to find out the following: how different cannabinoids can help combat cancer, research findings that support this, and the growing usage of cannabis and CBD as natural forms of medicine.
Prevalence of Cancer & Its Rapid Growth
On a worldwide scale, cancer is one of the top leading causes of death. In 2012, it was found that 57 percent of new cases of cancer affected people living in underdeveloped regions of the world. Some of these regions included countries in Central America, Africa, and Asia. Whereas, in the U.S., from 1990-2014, the number of people who died from cancer decreased by 25 percent. This is not to say that Americans don’t get diagnosed with cancer anymore though. But rather, this figure represents the changes that have occurred over the years regarding cancer death rates.
In addition, two main risk factors for developing cancer are obesity and old age. Despite these risk factors though, anyone can be diagnosed with cancer regardless of their age, ethnicity, and race. Even though there are various cancer treatment options available, several are ineffective, and/or they do more harm to the body than good. Recently, it was projected that by 2030, annually, the number of new cases of cancer will increase to 23.6 million. Not only are cancer diagnoses detrimental to the lives of the affected individuals, but also their family and friends who assume the role as support systems.
Medical Evidence Behind CBD’s Potential to Combat Cancer
Over the years, different studies, clinical trials, and experiments have been conducted to learn more about cannabis and CBD’s potential to combat cancer. Before we dive into the research, a few terms that are useful to know beforehand include the following:
Apoptosis: cell death that takes place as a traditionally controlled aspect of an organism’s growth or development. This occurs without the release of harmful substances.
Proliferation: the rapid growth and/or reproduction of a cell, component, or organism
Both THC and CBD possess the ability to help combat various forms of cancer. Before discussing how multiple cannabinoids can combat cancerous cells and growths, let’s mention several of cannabis’s medicinal benefits. For starters, one 2013 study discovered the anti-tumorigenic effects of cannabinoids like THC. It was also found that cannabinoids in general contain anti-proliferative effects. Then, the same study discovered CBD’s anti-proliferative and pro-apoptotic properties plus its ability to prevent cancer cell migration.
Useful Medicinal Properties of CBD to Help Combat Cancer
Furthermore, Cannabidiol is safe, non-toxic, and non-psychoactive. Therefore, this opens up a long-term potential for CBD combatting cancer. This cannabinoid has also shown to deliver analgesic, anti-emetic, anti-nausea, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties. These medicinal properties can help treat multiple diseases, especially cancer. Normally, people with cancer experience chronic pain, nausea, appetite loss, and inflammation. Fortunately, though, CBD can help alleviate these cancer-causing symptoms and improve one’s well-being.
Thus far, animal experiments have shown that Phyto-cannabinoids, endocannabinoids, and synthetic cannabinoids can work together to prevent tumors from growing and spreading. Also, according to one study, it’s indicated that the combination of CBD and THC could be more beneficial in decreasing cancer cell proliferation. However, more research should be conducted to explore the potential of cannabinoids being used to combat cancer.
Additional Research Findings about Cannabis and CBD’s Potential to Combat Cancer
In recent years, it has been found that CBD contains anti-tumoral properties. This was according to a study performed on mice in 2004. To this day, additional information is being released about the anti-tumorigenic effects of cannabinoids. Although CBD is known for its wide variety of medicinal properties, THC is medically beneficial as well. Specifically, one 2011 study found that THC and other cannabinoids possessed the ability to prevent tumor growth in animal models with cancer.
Additionally, the same study mentioned that the combination of THC and CBD can create an effective anti-tumoral action in various resistant tumors. Keep in mind that this finding was based on animal models with cancer though. However, one 2005 study confirmed CBD’s anti-tumoral properties plus its ability to constrain and control tumor invasion. This finding was based on human glioma cells as opposed to that of animals. It doesn’t stop here though. It has also been discovered that CBD can deliver anti-tumor effects in vitro and vivo. This finding indicates CBD’s potential to combat cancer while acting as an antineoplastic driving force.
CBD’s Potential to Combat Breast Cancer
Out of all types of cancer, breast cancer is one of the most common. Chemotherapy and radiation are commonly used to kill breast cancer cells. However, this can play havoc on one’s mind and body. In 2006 though, one study on athymic mice found that CBD was a strong preventer of cancer cell growth. The study concluded by suggesting that CBD and CBD-rich extracts should be further studied for several reasons. One main reason is to explore CBD’s potential to combat cancer.
Fast forward to 2011, another study was conducted on the topic of CBD and breast cancer. The study demonstrated CBD’s ability to stimulate the death of breast cancer cells. Thus, there’s reason to believe that CBD can be classified as an alternative form of medicine for breast cancer therapy. On a clinical basis, there’s a lack of therapeutic methods to treat aggressive forms of breast cancer. Thus, it’s evident that effective, safe, and non-toxic forms of medicine are needed. This is where cannabinoids can come in and play a role in combatting cancer.
Future Steps Regarding Cannabis and CBD’s Potential to Combat Cancer
Overall, cancer diagnoses continue to get handed out, which can negatively impact one’s quality of life. Due to the painful symptoms cancer patients experience, cannabinoids could help alleviate and relieve their discomfort. At the same time, cannabinoids can help prevent the spreading and growth of cancerous cells. Much more research must be done on humans in this area though. However, the findings that have been released so far are noteworthy.
At this point, there’s evidence supporting CBD’s potential to combat cancer. Now, the next step is to conduct more studies and clinical trials regarding this alternative form of medicine. If cannabinoids can help combat cancer and its painful symptoms, shouldn’t we put emphasis on studying them more?
Cancer Awareness Events & Fundraisers
Moreover, numerous yearly cancer-related events occur to help support those with the disease. A few of the most well-known ones include Relay for Life events and breast cancer marches including Susan G Komen’s ‘Race for the Cure’. Most of these events also involve the incorporation of fundraising and overall cancer awareness. For those who don’t know, the month of October is national cancer awareness month. Overall, there’s much we can learn about this horrible disease as well as preventative measures. Giveaway code: CBD changed my life.
For instance, cannabis and CBD usage can have a positive impact amongst those who do and don’t have a cancer diagnosis. The medicinal, nutritional, and therapeutic benefits of different cannabinoids continue to accumulate, especially after the conduction of various experiments and studies.
