Cannabis’s Ability to Provide Relief to Diabetes Symptoms

On a worldwide level, 400 million people are affected by diabetes, and up to five million people die annually from this disease, as stated by SensiSeeds. Unfortunately, the prevalence of diabetes is rising. However, evidence from certain research studies indicate that cannabis and CBD could interact with the endocannabinoid system to prevent and potentially help diabetes. What is Diabetes?

Diabetes can be defined as a group of metabolic disorders characterized by prolonged high blood glucose levels. In general, diabetes is associated with high-levels of fasting insulin and insulin resistance and low levels of high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, according to the Mayo Clinic. Fortunately, various studies involving cannabis and diabetes have been conducted. Results show some interesting findings that could give hope to those with diabetes. Cannabis and CBD Helps Diabetes

In 2013, a five-year-long study was conducted on people with diabetes including those that have used cannabis in their lifetime. Out of the 4,657 respondents, 579 of them were current cannabis users while 1,975 were past users. The remaining ones never used cannabis. The study’s researchers found that the current cannabis users had 16 percent lower fasting insulin levels as compared to the individuals who had never used cannabis. The same cannabis users had 17 percent lower levels of insulin resistance.

In other words, the current cannabis users exhibited reduced fasting insulin and insulin resistance levels, which is an indication that cannabis and CBD can help prevent the occurrence of diabetes in addition to controlling the symptoms of the disease.

Insulin Resistance & The Use of Cannabis:

Insulin resistance is a condition that causes cells to reject the normal mechanism of insulin, which is a hormone that’s produced by the body’s pancreas and one that’s fundamental to the proper regulation of glucose metabolism, according to SensiSeeds. In type 2 diabetes, Insulin Resistance (IR) is common, but in type 1 diabetes, the body is unable to produce insulin.

When the body’s cells become insulin-resistant, they’re unable to absorb the glucose that’s needed to supply the individual with energy. As a result, the unused glucose accumulates in the bloodstream, which often leads to hyperglycemia, as also stated by SensiSeeds. In the same 2013 study, the researchers found that current cannabis users had a mean Insulin Resistance of 1.8 as compared to 2.2 for previous cannabis users and 2.5 for individuals who never used cannabis before.

Additionally, it was found that the current cannabis users had lower levels of blood glucose compared to previous and non-cannabis users. These findings demonstrate the strong potential cannabis has as a form of treatment for people with diabetes. The editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Medicine, Dr. Joseph S. Alpert expressed in a HoneyColony article that he strongly supports the findings in the study, and he called upon government researchers to build upon the study’s findings.

Obesity & Cannabis:

Moreover, according to Diabetes.co, obesity can trigger changes to the body’s metabolism, and those changes can cause fat tissue to release fat molecules into the body. As a result, this can affect insulin responsive cells while leading to reduced insulin sensitivity. Although obesity can be caused by a variety of factors, if someone is obese or overweight, they’re at a greater risk of developing type 2 diabetes. Especially if they carry extra weight around their abdomen area.

In a 2012 NCBI.NLM rat study on obesity associated with diabetes and the incorporation of cannabis, it was found that obese rats lost significant weight, and they experienced an increase in pancreas weight after exposure to organic cannabis extract. Although this study was performed on rats rather than humans, it nonetheless shows the potential of cannabis when it comes to obesity.

Also, regarding obesity, in the previous 2013 diabetes and cannabis study, it was found that the current cannabis users had smaller waist circumferences as compared to the previous and non-cannabis users. There’s definite research which shows cannabis and CBD being used to act on the endocannabinoid system to regulate diabetes. Research also suggests providing relief to those who are obese and diabetic.

Cannabis & CBD Helps Diabetes Sufferers:

For those who have diabetes, a wide array of unwanted symptoms can frequently occur, which can be effectively treated with cannabis and CBD. For example, a 2005 American Alliance for Medical Cannabis research paper lists several benefits that both CBD and cannabis can provide to diabetes sufferers, which include the following:

Although there are several questions and concerns about using cannabis to regulate diabetes, it should not be ruled out completely. There’s substantial evidence that shows how cannabis can provide relief to diabetics. However, more research needs to be conducted so that both the doctors and the patients understand the impact cannabis can have on a person’s well-being.
