CBD Could Be a Part of Your Endometriosis Treatment

Over 100 million women around the world have endometriosis. Millions of other women do as well, but endometriosis generally goes undiagnosed if it is less severe. Despite being a relatively common condition, there are no sure-fire ways to treat endometriosis. Learn more about how CBD could be a part of your endometriosis treatment plan.

About Endometriosis

Nowadays, more people know and understand what exactly endometriosis is. Endometriosis is a condition where tissues that are normally only present in the uterus are found in other places throughout the body. These tissues, which create painful lesions, can be found throughout a women’s reproductive system, and even in the bowels, intestines, and anywhere there is scar tissue.

Common symptoms of endometriosis include severe pain in the pelvic region, a painful build-up of scar tissue, and if left undiagnosed and untreated, can cause infertility.

Endometriosis is a painful condition, and can affect a woman’s day-to-day livelihood, activity level, and overall happiness.

Common Endometriosis Treatment Plans

Currently, there is no cure for endometriosis. There are, however, a few treatments that can help to mitigate its painful impact on a woman’s body.

Endometriosis can get worse by the release of estrogen. This has become a target for doctors, and means that hormone therapies have become a great option when treating endometriosis. Oral contraception and progesterone act to shrink the lining of the uterus, thereby decreasing endometriosis-related pain.

If lesions are present, surgery is an option that some women choose to undergo. First and foremost, surgery is one of the only ways to diagnose endometriosis. Luckily, during surgery, doctors are able to remove the lesions and further explore the ways in which the condition spreads.

At this time, endometriosis treatments are mainly focused on pain-relief. These treatments show the growing necessity for the medical field to understand the ways in which this condition proliferates.

CBD as a Part of Your Endometriosis Treatment Plan

There are a number of ways in which CBD can be a part of your endometriosis treatment plan.

A research review published only a few years ago suggests that the endocannabinoid system is an excellent target when approaching endometriosis pain-management. More specifically, endometriosis pain is located on the central and peripheral neural levels of the nervous system. ECS receptors are located in these same areas, making the ECS an effective target for endometriosis management.

The same research review goes on to explore the relationship between the levels of endocannabinoid receptors in those with endometriosis. The fact is, women with endometriosis have lower levels of CB1 receptors in their endometrial tissues, suggesting that reduced ECS functioning might be reflective of how much pain a woman with endometriosis experiences.

A recent study, published by The Chaim Sheba Medical Center in Israel, suggests that the endocannabinoid system can also target inflammatory and neuropathic pain in those with endometriosis. These findings suggest that CBD could not only help to reduce the creation and release of inflammatory cytokines, but also help to repair physical damage to the neurons affected by endometriosis lesions.

Another study, published by the University of Massachusetts Medical School, found that cannabinoids reduce inflammation on many levels. Interestingly, the study infers that cannabinoids, like CBD, suppress the synthesis of eicosanoids, which could help to reduce pain caused by endometriosis tissues.

CBD Endometriosis Treatment Plan

Based on the depth of research linking the endocannabinoid system and CBD to endometriosis pain-relief, it’s clear that CBD should be considered when creating an endometriosis treatment plan.
