CBD and Sleep: A Research Review

Many CBD users claim that their sleep has improved, but is there any science supporting the connection between CBD and sleep? The Endocannabinoid System & Sleep

This study explored the endocannabinoid system’s influence on levels of sleep, specifically inhibition and excitation and the brain’s sensory response during sleep. Using mice, scientists found that the endocannabinoid system greatly influences REM (high-quality) sleep.

For over a decade, scientists have examined the connection between CBD and sleep. Here are a few of their studies and summarized findings:

In 2004, a study examined the effect of both CBD and THC on sleep in young adults. CBD was shown to have an impact on both nocturnal sleep and wakefulness. While THC was obviously a factor in this study, it still suggests CBD’s influence on overall sleep patterns.

A study conducted in 2006 examined the effect of CBD on sleep in rats. Using neurons as a pathway, CBD was found to activate alertness, suggesting CBD’s potential for those suffering from sleep disorders.

In 2016, a study explored CBD as a sleep aid, particularity for those suffering from insomnia and anxiety. The test subject was a young girl with PTSD, and it was found that CBD helped her to improve the quality of her sleep when used over a period of time.

Overall, it is clear that CBD, using the endocannabinoid system, effects sleep and promotes high-quality sleep.
