What are Cannabis Terpenes? New Terpene Profiles at Infinite CBD
What are Cannabis Terpenes?
Terpenes are hydrocarbon molecules that give plants their unique aroma. They provide health benefits that can help with digestion, depression, pain and more. Terpenes are in everyday plants like mangoes, thyme and lavender. These same terpenes are also in the cannabis plant, which are known as cannabis terpenes.
Introduction of Terpenes
Terpenes are organic compounds. These hydrocarbon molecules each have a unique profile which make up their aroma. They are most commonly found in plants but few insects also emit terpenes. Terpenes produce various fragrances to attract predators and parasites of herbivores. Due to being aromatic hydrocarbons, they have this protective function.
In today’s society, many people use essential oils for aromatherapy treatment. Use lavender oil to relax or peppermint oil for digestion. This is because of the oils terpenes.
Some of the same terpenes you find is these everyday essential oils are also the same terpenes you would find in cannabis.
Cannabis terpenes are not only responsible for the aroma and flavor of a cannabis strain but the terpenes also determine the psychoactive response. There are around 200 identifiable terpenes in the cannabis plant, of which only a few are notable.
Terpenes may be classified by the number of isoprene molecules present. Isoprene is a hydrocarbon molecule consisting of five carbon atoms attaching with eight hydrogen atoms (C5H8). True terpenes are usually measured by the amount of isoprene units.
Type of Terpenes
- Monoterpenes; contains two isoprene molecules with a molecular formula of C10H16
Examples include terpineol, limonene, myrcene, linalool and pinene
- Sesquiterpenes; contains three isoprene molecules with a molecular formula of C15H24
Examples include humulene, farnesene and farnesol
- Diterpenes; contains four isoprene molecules with a molecular formula of C20H32
Examples include cafestol, kahweol, cembrene and taxadiene
Both cannabinoids and terpenes produce in the sticky resin of trichomes. Since the two are related, cannabinoids and terpenes contribute to the entourage effect. Infinite CBD uses single-molecule CBD. Because of this, we add terpenes to our isolate in Absolute Zero and vape cartridges for additional desired effects.
Our use of cannabis terpenes gives our customers the opportunity to receive strain-specific effects, without having the psychoactive effects of THC. Terpenes act on receptors or neurotransmitters to enhance norepinephrine activity, increase dopamine activity and augment GABA. Myrcene is one of the most common terpenes in the cannabis plant. It is a monoterpene that is in mango, thyme, lemongrass, and hops. Its health benefits provide relief from insomnia, pain, depression, inflammation and muscle tension.
Each cannabis derived terpenoid strain is made up of a unique terpenes creating its profile. A few common terpenes in cannabis are, Camphene, Alpha-Pinene, Beta-Myrcene, D-Limonene, Caryophyllene, and Linalool. A cannabis strain is made up of a variety of these terpenes to provide the user with the psychological and psychoactive effects of cannabis.
