In the crazy world, we live in, it’s important to take a second to appreciate the good things. This can include family, friends, strangers, and even places. Did you know that actively practicing gratitude increases happiness? Science has even proven it!
Gratitude is more than saying “thank you.” Gratitude is the act of recognizing someone or something. There doesn’t always need to be a reason to express gratitude – you can express it out of the blue. Gratitude is about acknowledgment, either of a particular action or of a person’s character. You can practice gratitude verbally, through actions, or a combination of the two.
Many studies confirm that practicing gratitude impacts a person’s level of happiness. The following studies include a vast array of participants, confirming the universality of gratitude.
In 2006, a study at Tohoku Gakuin University confirmed the connection between the practice of kindness and happiness. After surveying hundreds of participants, scientists found that performing acts of kindness increases a person’s subjective happiness.
The study also found that happy people actually become more grateful when they keep track of practicing gratefulness.
Luther College conducted a similar study in 2009, which explored the relationship between forgiveness and gratitude as psychological factors. The study found that the concept of gratitude is “strongly associated” with well-being.
Another study, published in 2016, examined the relationship between individuals seeking treatment for mental health and the practice of gratitude. More specifically, if gratitude writing exercises could improve a person’s mental state. After about 4 weeks, participants reported that their mental health had improved.
In 2013, popular Youtube channel SoulPancake released a video titled “An Experiment in Gratitude | the Science of Happiness.” This 7-minute video has reached over 5 million viewers for a reason – because it resonates with individuals across all identities.
In the video, participants are asked to write down some things about someone they love – a person who has done a lot for them. Participants are then asked to call that person and read them what they had written about them. The results are undeniably smile-worthy. Check out the video and see for yourself – practicing gratitude increases happiness!
